Exploring Principles of Biology, Biotechnology, and Bioengineering
This program provided a hands-on approach to understanding and the fundamental biological principles at the heart of biotechnology and bioengineering. For two weeks, the learners worked as a team to explore how cells communicate with one another, manipulate and respond to their environment, and give rise to tissues, organs, and organisms. They discussed the differences between different types of cells and the genetics that make them tick. They also looked at how humans have harnessed this natural machinery to develop novel medicines and materials. Throughout each of these topics the learners discussed what happens when things don’t work as intended as is the case in many diseases.
